Retinal Photography
Our office offers high-resolution retinal photography, which uses a computer-integrated digital imaging system to record a detailed view of the retina. This image provides an excellent reference point for future comparisons.
Digital retinal imaging assists in the detection and management of problems such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, hypertensive retinopathy, glaucoma and other diseases of the retina.
We recommend that all our patients have this test. It is especially important for those with a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, retinal diseases, flashing lights, decreased vision or a strong spectacle prescription.
Visual Field Testing
Visual field analyzers test your side or peripheral vision while you focus on a central target. This information is essential for the diagnosis of various eye conditions.
At our office we have advanced automated visual field machines that compare your responses to age-corrected normalized data to determine whether your results are normal.
Your optometrist then interprets the results. Plotting of the visual field is important for many eye and systemic disorders. Some of the disorders we diagnose or manage with visual fields are:
- Glaucoma
- Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Thyroid Disorder
- Optic Glioma
- Pituitary Gland Disorder
- Stroke
- Aneurysms
- Tumours
Pachymetry
A pachymeter is a device that uses ultrasound technology to determine the thickness of the cornea.
Pachymetry is important for pressure measurements of the eye. Thinner than average corneas are at a higher risk for glaucoma development. It is important to take this measurement to know your individual risk factor for the development of glaucoma.
Pachymetry is also an essential measurement prior to certain refractive surgical procedures, such as LASIK or PRK. These surgeries involve curvature correction techniques to the cornea to eliminate corrective lens use. This measurement is important to ensure a safe amount of central corneal tissue remains after the surgery.
