What happens at my eye examination?
When you come to our office, one of our Optometric Assistants will take a thorough individual and family eye health, vision and medical history, and gather computerized eye measurements prior to seeing the doctor.
Dr. Bond and Dr. Miller will provide a comprehensive eye examination to assess your vision and eye health status. The results will be reviewed along with your current vision needs, health history, lifestyle, career and hobbies, in order to recommend your best vision care options.
Eye Care
Regular eye health evaluations are essential for preserving our sight and health. During an eye examination vital systemic health information is gained by viewing the interior of the eye and adjacent cardiovascular tissue. The eye itself can develop harmful diseases, which in many cases may have little or no symptoms.
Some of the signs that you may have an eye disorder include:
- Blurred or hazy vision
- Floaters or flashes
- Headaches
- Light sensitivity
- Red watery eyes
- Excessive tearing
- Foreign body sensation
We’ll advise and ensure you stay on a healthy schedule of when it’s time to be re-examined. So, don’t rely on broken glasses or lost contact lenses to remind you of your next appointment. Follow the advice of experts, have your eyes examined by an optometrist on a regular basis.
Low Vision Services
The use of glasses or contact lenses alone is not always effective in treating a condition. This usually occurs from damage from eye disease, trauma, or birth defects. Special magnifiers, telescopic devices or other specially adapted glasses, and other devices can assist in improving visual function. Our optometrists provide comprehensive Low Vision services to maximize remaining sight and restoring quality of life.
Laser Vision Co-Management:
Our doctors can help determine your candidacy for laser corrective surgery. We are educated on all current technologies to offer you the best vision treatment. We will manage your pre-operative and post-operative visits and guide you to a leading edge laser eye surgery clinic.
There are several types of vision correction. Since the early 1990’s LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) has been the most widely performed procedure around the world. A thin flap of the corneal is removed while the computer driven excimer laser re-shapes the contour of the cornea to remove it’s prescription. The flap is carefully replaced and your eye regains it’s natural consistency without sutures or stitches. The flap acts as a natural bandage and protects the inner cornea where the operation was performed and this is why the surgery is so streamlined and effective.
After the surgery your eyes may feel irritated and watery for a while. Taking a nap and getting rest after the procedure help with comfort and your eyes heal. The surgery center may give eye shields for sleeping to ensure you do not rub your eyes excessively. Some patients do experience some pain with the procedure and a mild over-the-counter pain reliever is all that is necessary to relieve these typical symptoms.
Taking at least 2 days off work for LASIK is necessary. The first day for the surgery and the second for extra healing and recovery is suggested. After one week you can usually return to your daily exercise and routines.
The other widely used laser corrective technique is PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). This technique is usually preferred if the cornea is too thin for LASIK or there are irregular curvatures to the cornea. With this procedure the front epithelial layer of the cornea is removed and the laser re-shapes the cornea. After the laser is used a specialized medication and a contact lens are applied to the cornea. The cornea heals slower with PRK and vision recovery will normally be slower than LASIK.
Our optometrists are proud to be affiliated with the best refractive surgeons in Ontario. The surgeons have experience with thousands of cases and are considered to be world leaders in laser vision correction.
